Couch Enforcement in Keene, New Hampshire – Politically Motivated?

The word soviet means council, as in city council or a committee. It is a democratically elected body of people set up with the purpose of controlling the lives of others. These people would get together and plan the lives of those in their local communities, answering to higher up, larger soviets until they reached the Supreme Soviet where the central planning happened. That is basically how the Soviet Union was run, with the consent of the governed. The community soviets would lay their plans, make their laws, and institute their plans and if you didn´t like it, tough. The people in charge of the soviets had their visions and come hell or high water they were going to see to it that those visions were made into reality. In the Soviet Union, if you thought better of the local soviet´s plan and spoke your mind or dissented, the punishment was severe. But then again in the Soviet Union most people were dependent on government for their existence. Why, their whole lives were planned for them from cradle to grave by the government. At least, that´s what I was taught.

Today, we have similar institutions in the United States. We have city councils. We have county boards. We have committees that pass laws and make their plans for your property and the property of your neighbor. They believe that since they have the power to do such things and since they collect your money in the form of taxes that they can tell you what you can and can´t do with your property, the same property that you are paying for, that you are supposed to be the sovereign of. A meek and docile public hardly ever takes the time to even question what these people are doing, they simply assume these people have the best interests of the general public at heart and obey the dictates that are thrown their way. They go along to get along. And if they violate an ordinance and are cited and fined for it, they mostly merely grumble, pay the fine, correct the problem the soviet – I mean the bureaucrats – have with it and move on with their lives as if nothing happened. How easy it seems for these people to forgive, or how hard it is for them to figure out they´ve been ripped off.

In Keene New Hampshire there is a person known as the city planner. Her name is Mikaela L. Engert. Judging from her bios and the information she posted about herself online, she seems rather proud of her position in the local soviet, I mean the city government. She seems particularly worried about the effects of climate change in Keene and is making plans to help the residents there deal with their greenhouse gas emissions. Good thing, because I´m sure the citizens of Keene contribute mightily to the greenhouse gases in this world with their gas lawn mowers and they would want to do their share to make things right, particularly if it means giving more of their hard earned money to government in the form of greenhouse gas taxes. But, we shouldn´t worry about that. I´m sure these bureaucrats know exactly what they´re doing and they have only your best interests at heart, and that´s why they should be able to tell you what to do with your private property.

Ian Freeman forgives Mikaela Engert for couch incident

MikaelaDear Mikaela,

I forgive you. You probably never realized, perhaps until now, that government hurts people. I do not know you, but from listening to what you’ve said on the radio and reading about you on the Internet, I imagine that like many people, you believe that government is a handy tool you can use to make life better for people. While your intentions may be pure, the method is not. Government is force. Were you oblivious to that fact? After all, you are one of the people calling themselves part of the “City of Keene”, so whether you knew or not, that’s the tool you advocate. I’m guessing you didn’t know, as you did say on 08/09/08’s “Talkback”:

“I wouldn’t advise aggressing against anybody.”

I really appreciated when you said that! I think people working together voluntarily is a great thing. However, threatening people with violence is not a nice way to build a community with mutual respect. Based on your statement on Talkback, I thought you understood that. Imagine my surprise when I discovered it was you who snitched me out to the “code enforcers” over my tenants’ couch. You said you wouldn’t advise aggressing against your neighbor, then the very same week you initiated aggression against me!

I don’t know whether you realized that what you did was aggression (It is, in the same way that hiring a hitman makes you responsible for the hit, even though you didn’t actually pull the trigger.), but either way I forgive you. Additionally, you needn’t be afraid of me snitching you out for something about your property that I don’t like, as I don’t believe your property is any of my business. Perhaps fear of retaliation was why you were afraid to come and meet me like a good neighbor would have instead of running to the “code enforcers” and having them threaten me into complying with your “city” ordinances.

Did you realize at any point that men with guns would actually throw me into a prison cell over this? That’s exactly what happened, because force is the only tool government has at its disposal. Of course the irony of the entire situation is that it would only cost a few bucks to take the couch out to the dump, but instead your friends in the “City of Keene” were willing to spend thousands of taxpayer dollars to lock me in a cage for several months over this issue! How does that make any sense?

To answer my own question, the reason they were willing to hurt me and my family (my wonderful companion Julia was made quite ill by my absence, and couldn’t work) is because it’s not about the couch, but about being obedient to the arbitrary dictates of the people calling themselves the government.

So, you were either ignorant about the coercive nature of the agency that employs you, or you’re completely aware of government’s coercive nature and you embrace it. I will presume the former, because I like to believe that people are generally good, and I believe that you are probably a very good person, just misled. I can relate as I was also ignorant to the violence of the system at one time. Then I discovered the ideas of liberty and allowing others to be free.

I forgive you for hurting me and my loved ones, Mikaela. You have no obligation to do so, but an apology from you would sure go a long way to healing the wounds and proving to the world (I imagine you’ve gotten a few emails and phone calls from those watching this situation.) that you understand that what you did was wrong.

I also hope to hear that you have embraced the idea of honoring your neighbors’ choices, even if you disagree with them. Don’t hesitate to get in touch. I don’t bite!

Your peaceful, down-the-street neighbor,
Ian Freeman

Tracking your favorite jailed activist

Posted on November 15th, 2008 by bile Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , 1 Comment »

Given the recent incarceration of Ian Freeman (Bernard) of Free Talk Live many wanted to create a website to tell the ridiculous story. Something to put on “Free Ian” pins or yard signs. I wanted to be a bit more efficient and have a centralized site to host information on all those liberty activist who have or are jailed. Including information on their captures. So I went and registered JailedActivist.info.

It was the best domain I could come up. Everything else I thought of was taken. I don’t think it’s all that bad.

Anyway… I was up till 4am setting it up and now it’s ready for consumption. The theme needs to be changed and I need to add more info obviously but my writeup on Ian’s situation is pretty thorough.

If you’d like to help out in populating the site please register and send me a message through the contact page so I can permission you to do so.

You can find the info on Ian at: http://ian.jailedactivist.info

If you’ve like a full rundown of what happened or didn’t keep up with all the post updates I made visit:

Expect more footage from the event later today.

According to AnarchoJesse, Dave Ridley and others on the NHFree forums the host of the internationally syndicated talk radio show Free Talk Live has been arrested and jailed for contempt of court on 3 counts and for saying he’d refuse to pay fines due to refusing to remove the couch. Ian has been dealing with the city of Keene, New Hampshire over a couch in his renters yard. An anonymous person complained and he was told to remove it and refused until he was able to meet his accuser. Today at 1:30PM he had his second court appearance.

UPDATE #3: preliminary report from FreeKeene.com

Active FreeKeene blogger Ian Freeman today helped the Keene District Court prove that it is ready to crack down on non-violent peaceful people today. At least 6 officers of various rank were present in court to try and outnumber the liberty activists. Judge (James) Burke was obviously ready to order Ian’s arrest, and did so less than 45 seconds after entering the courtroom. Ian was then taken to a second room where his supporters could not go with him. He was viewed on closed circuit TV as he continued to question the system and not consent, and drew two further contempt of court charges, all three for 30 days in jail.

UPDATE #6:

NH Constitution, Part I, Art. 18
http://www.nh.gov/constitution/billofrights.html

[Art.] 18. [Penalties to be Proportioned to Offenses; True Design of Punishment.] All penalties ought to be proportioned to the nature of the offense. No wise legislature will affix the same punishment to the crimes of theft, forgery , and the like, which they do to those of murder and treason. Where the same undistinguishing severity is exerted against all offenses, the people are led to forget the real distinction in the crimes themselves, and to commit the most flagrant with as little compunction as they do the lightest offenses. For the same reason a multitude of sanguinary laws is both impolitic and unjust. The true design of all punishments being to reform, not to exterminate mankind.
