I would have asked for some kind of note in writing, with the officer and election official's signatures on it. What good would it have done? Probably nothing, but at least you'd have it on record as such. Police reports can be so inaccurate that I wonder why they even file them. When Jenn was hit by a car, the on duty police officer was supposed to finish the report that day, even if it meant overtime. (He would have been paid, as explained by her lawyer.) The officer didn't, but instead went home and then on vacation for the weekend, finishing it sometime the next week. I could only imagine what the officer in this case probably thought, "Oh great, some nutjob wants to vote for somebody who's not even on the ballot..." and the rest was just annoying paperwork.
