Thursday’s OT link: Proposals to abolish state income tax, decriminalize marijuana, clear another hurdle [Mass]  I’m sure these get kicked around all the time, but this go around the state income tax proposal has about 100,000 signatures.  (Apparently you need 66,593 signatures… then the state legislature has until May to make it law, otherwise you need another 11,099 signatures to get it on the ballot.  Last time it was on the ballot in 2002, it got 45%, so chances are fairly good this time around.)  It would be interesting to see some of these pass in such a liberal state.

I hear about that movement fairly often because it’s been so close to passing. You can find more info here on it.

I wonder how far the state gov’t could counteract this by raising fees (like the auto excise tax) and tolls.  Big government dies hard, especially with the Democrats holding super majorities in both legislative houses and the governorship.

Say we get rid of the income tax at all levels, would switching to just a sales tax/user fee be enough for public programs unless it goes hand in hand with getting rid of some wasteful programs?

Obviously not. Thats the point. We don’t need these ‘public’ programs. Get rid of the statute monopolies, allow competition, let people opt out, then cut taxes. Besides, federally our income taxes can be completely removed and we’d still have the same amount of money coming in we did just over 10 years ago. Some states don’t need income tax or sales tax… like New Hampshire. I’d say they are doing just fine compared to Mass. The governments may rise other taxes and tolls but those people see upfront and will either demand programs cut or ask for income taxes back so it’s not so obvious they are being robbed.

I saw this the other night flipping thru the stations:  http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22332446/  if you watch the video, you’ll notice that Chris Matthews is wearing the Freddy Krueger sweater.  That and he looks really old, more so than McCain himself.  Creepy.

They both look 10 seconds from death.
What really really bugs me is that Matthews claims McCain is the only one in the Republican Party that is vocal against torture and McCain adds Powell.
